Doug and Christy Jarling announced on Sunday that Jarling's Custard Cup in Champaign will be closing as soon as inventory runs out, as part of preparation for new ownership.

The line had remained out the door ever since, up until the doors closed late Monday afternoon.

“Close the door we can’t A/C the entire outside!”," cried Christy, about 1:30 p.m.

Doug and Christy bought the secret recipe from his parents in the mid-nineties.  According to the Jarlings website, the store will continue to serve the family recipe once its reopens under new owners.

Dan Hargens has been a customer since he moved to town seven years ago - and says he’ll miss recruiting new customers to Jarling’s.

“I started bringing my friends here," he said.  "And in the December months I would catch them looking longingly at Jarling’s. Now it’s just too bad. It’s just the smoothest best recipe in town.”

Hargens waited in line for an hour on Monday and says he plans to come back when the shop reopens. Still, he’s stocking up just in case.

The Jarlings apologized for the abrupt closure and posted on social media, "Although we tried, we cannot keep up with the daily demands of the 'cup. We had to make this decision."

The Champaign location will reopen at a later date once the new owners can be trained.

The Danville Custard Cup will remain open.
