Chicago-Area High School Remembers Slain Diplomat

Former teachers of an American diplomat killed in a bombing in Afghanistan have remembered the woman as focused and determined to unravel big problems.

Several of Anne Smedinghoff's former teachers spoke Tuesday at a memorial at the high school she graduated from in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park.

Smedinghoff was one of five Americans killed Saturday in a suicide car bombing while they were delivering textbooks to school children. The Taliban claimed responsibility.

Fenwick High School Spanish teacher Irene Drago says the 25-year-old woman had a gift for foreign languages and a quiet intelligence.

Drago says teachers are supposed to inspire their students, but sometimes students like Smedinghoff come along and inspire teachers.

Smedinghoff continued to visit the school, most recently a few months ago.
