The Frances Nelson Health Center was formally established in 1969 as a free clinic aimed at promoting equal access to health care—and continues with that mission today.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded more than $12 million to 40 community health centers across Illinois. The funding will be used to expand access to substance abuse treatment and mental health services.

Federal lawmakers allowed funding for Community Health Centers to lapse last fall. For Promise Healthcare in Champaign, the loss in federal funding would make it difficult to expand much-needed services in the community.

US Senator Dick Durbin wants to see the United States eventually implement a “Medicare for all” type health care program. The Illinois Democrat acknowledges that isn't likely with Republicans in control of both houses of Congress and the White House, but says a "public option" on current health insurance exchanges could be an interim step.
