Dialogue

Spiraling Upward: A Sonic Witness of Two Generations Carrying the Sound Forward…Louis Cato & Isaiah Collier on Music Consciousness

Stephanie Orellana / Illinois Public Media

This episode of “Dialogue” features in-depth conversations with two of contemporary jazz’s most compelling artists: Isaiah Collier and Louis Cato. Both artists represent a generation reclaiming jazz music as a tool for Black consciousness, cultural preservation, and resistance.

Both artists reject musical conformity, advocate for the jam session as sacred space, honor ancestral lineage while forging their own paths, and view their work as part of an unbroken continuum of Black resistance music—from spirituals to blues to contemporary jazz fusion.
