May 26 Illinois History Minute

Miles Davis was born in 1926 in Alton to well-to-do parents and grew up in East St. Louis. Miles Davis’ progression through multiple musical styles from hard bop to jazz fusion, can still start arguments among fans, decades after his death.

On this day in 1943, team rosters were announced for the very first season of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The teams included the Rockford Peaches, who were fictionalized in the movie “A League Of Their Own”. Other Illinois teams that played during the league’s eleven-year run were the Peoria Redwings, the Chicago Colleens and the Springfield Sallies.
