Digital Projection Coming To Champaign’s Virginia Theatre

Champaign’s Virginia Theatre is adding digital film projection to its list of recent upgrades.

On Wednesday, the city’s park district unanimously approved the low bid on the system, giving operators a choice for how to screen films   The bid for the equipment is just under $110-thousand.

Park District spokeswoman Laura Auteberry said adjustments are underway to accommodate both digital prints and 35-millimeter movies.

"In 2014, fewer and fewer movies are going to be available in 35 millimeter," she said. "So to continue being a movie house in the way that we are, we have to be able to adapt for either version."

The Virginia Theater has already set its News-Gazette Classic Film Series, beginning the end of August and carrying on into next summer.

The 16th annual Roger Ebert film festival, better known as Ebertfest, is scheduled for next April 23 to the 27th next year.
