Former Southern Indiana County Auditor Charged with Theft

A former county auditor in southern Indiana faces six counts of theft and one of official misconduct for allegedly charging more than $5,400 in personal purchases to county-issued credit cards.

The charges filed Monday against former Monroe County Auditor Amy Gerstman allege she used the county cards to pay for clothing, travel, her children's school tuition and even her Indiana University Alumni Association membership dues.

The 43-year-old Gerstman was being held Monday evening at the Monroe County Jail. Records there didn't indicate whether she had an attorney.

The Herald-Times reports a State Board of Accounts audit released in June 2012 revealed the financial irregularities.

Gerstman is a Democrat who was elected in November 2008 and served a 4-year term. Her annual salary as auditor was nearly $54,000.
