Quinn Signs Medicaid Expansion Into Law

Gov. Pat Quinn has signed a bill expanding Medicaid to cover low-income Illinois adults who don't have children at home - a big part of President Barack Obama's health care law.

Quinn made it official Monday at the University of Illinois at Chicago's medical facilities.

The Chicago Democrat is a longtime supporter and says it'll give many Illinoisans access to quality health care.  Quinn says he wanted to sign it into law before Obama visits his home state this week.

Up to half a million uninsured will be newly eligible for coverage. The federal government will foot the bill the first three years.

Under the plan, up to 342,000 residents are expected to enroll by 2017.  Some Republicans say they're worried about sustainability.
