Tollway Worker Dies, Trooper Hurt In Aurora Crash

An Illinois Tollway maintenance worker died after a crash on Interstate 88 in Aurora that also seriously injured an Illinois State Police trooper.

Monday night's accident happened around 9:30 p.m. when a tractor trailer hit the pair as they helped another disabled semi.

In a statement Tuesday, the head of the Tollway identified the worker as Vincent Petrella. Kristi Lafleur says Petrella was on a "routine job'' when "things went horribly wrong.''

State police spokeswoman Monique Bond says trooper is hospitalized and in serious condition.

Lafleur says Petrella began working as an equipment operator for the Tollway in 2005. He joined the agency in 2001 as a toll collector.

“Vincent was a selfless man, dedicated to his family and his job," said Gov. Pat Quinn.  "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow employees during this difficult time.  I am ordering the state's flags to be flown at half-staff so all Illinois citizens can be reminded of Vincent's life of service and sacrifice."

The accident forced the temporary closure of all eastbound I-88 lanes and some westbound lanes.
