Representatives from Peoples Gas are attempting to reassure skeptical residents in rural Mahomet that the natural gas leak from December 2016 is under control and it is working with homeowners who have contaminated wells.

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency staff will be canvassing homes in rural Mahomet Monday, following reports last December of a natural gas leak from a nearby storage well owned by Peoples Gas.

More than 100 residents now know more about a natural gas leak in rural Champaign County, and lawyers representing homeowners with contaminated wells are looking for more answers.

A gas leak on the north edge of Champaign led to the evacuation of buildings on Interstate Drive between Mattis and Prospect Tuesday morning, and a request for motorists to avoid the area.
