The Crisis Nursery provides emergency-base child care services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no fees or income eligibility. They also offer a variety of parent education classes and support groups for mothers at risk of depression during pregnancy or after the birth of a child, among other programs.

A state mandate requires all pregnant women in Illinois be screened for depression as part of their prenatal care. But new research study from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign finds that those screenings may overlook a significant proportion of women who have suicidal thoughts. 

Up to 20 percent of women experience perinatal depression, which occurs during pregnancy or after giving birth. Karen Tabb, social work professor at the University of Illinois, studies factors that put women at risk of perinatal depression, which is associated with worse outcomes for both mom and baby.
