There are three leading Democratic candidates so far to replace Senator Dick Durbin, who announced earlier this year he would not be seeking reelection. This includes Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

We continue our series of in-depth conversations featuring the Senate candidates with Kelly. She was born in 1956 in Harlem, New York and is the daughter of a second generation grocer and a postal worker. Kelly studied at Bradley University in Peoria and has a Bachelor's in psychology and a Master’s in counseling. She directed a crisis nursery in Peoria. Later in life, Kelly earned a Ph.D. in political science from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

She has worked in municipal government in Matteson, Illinois and Cook County. Kelly was also an Illinois state lawmaker, then worked for the Illinois treasurer for several years, and won her Congressional seat in a special election in 2013. Kelly joins us live today in our studio in Urbana.
