February 14, 2025: $10 million dollar settlement in Sonya Massey case and Trump/Musk continue remaking US government

Our Friday Politics Reporter Roundup focused on major stories out of Springfield and Washington, DC.

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Attorneys for the family of Sonya Massey say a $10 million settlement from county officials in Illinois is the “first step in getting full justice” for the Black woman fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy. An attorney says the settlement from Sangamon County will go to Massey's two teenage children.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Elon Musk has called for the United States to “delete entire agencies” from the federal government. Musk has consolidated control over large swaths of the government with President Donald Trump’s blessing since assuming leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency. That’s included sidelining career officials, gaining access to sensitive databases and inviting a constitutional clash over the limits of presidential authority.
