Former Illinois governor Jim Edgar dies at 79
Chicago Sun-Times File
Former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, who led the state through most of the 1990's, passed away on Sunday. Edgar spent three decades in state government — as a legislative aide, state representative, and legislative director for Governor Jim Thompson.
He then went on to be secretary of state, and finally, in 1991, was elected governor. Notably, he was the last governor elected from outside the Chicago area. We remember Edgar today, and we’ll have a longer conversation on his life in the near future.
