Illinois is a transcontinental hub for railroads, and there could be major changes afoot in the industry with implications here.

Canadian National, which decades ago acquired Illinois Central, is trying to acquire Kansas City Southern. That could lead to the "Springfield Speedway," a multi-million dollar upgrade to tracks across central Illinois.

Meanwhile, Amtrak — which is seeing a rebound in ridership as the pandemic eases — recently announced a 15-year plan that would expand and enhance service across the state.
