Speaker of the Illinois House reflects on ‘responsible and compassionate and balanced’ budget

Over the weekend, the Illinois General Assembly finished its spring legislative session and passed a state budget. However, lawmakers put off work on a number of other important topics — including how to keep Chicago-area mass transit agencies from going over a fiscal cliff. On top of that, a number of Governor J.B. Pritzker’s priorities were shelved, including a proposal to let community colleges to offer bachelor’s degrees in high-demand fields and another to ban cell phones from classrooms.
