Teacher of the Year forms non-profit in honor of fallen student
Briana Morales is the 2023 Illinois State Board of Education Teacher of the Year. She is an 11th and 12th grade English and Language Arts teacher at the Gordon Bush Alternative Center in East St. Louis. She helps her students write poetry to help them deal with grief over seeing family and friends taken by violence by writing poetry. She's founded a non-profit called Sisterhood of Hope, in memory of one of her students, Da’miya Brown.
