D. Description of Supplemental Outreach Initiatives

Establishment of Internship Program. Illinois Public Media initiated an internship program with Parkland Community College in Champaign, Illinois in January 2010. Internships in five areas of broadcasting were offered for course credit to provide work experience and encourage development of various broadcasting skills. One Parkland student served as a radio news intern for spring semester 2010. A radio production assistant intern (Music/Arts programming) and a radio traffic intern are working for course credit summer semester 2010.

Sponsorship of Community Event. Since 2003, Illinois Public Media’s Youth Media Workshop has mentored African-American youth and equipped them with audio and video equipment to gather and create authentic stories about their community. After five years of teaching African-American students directly, the YMW invested in teacher training during summer 2009, so that educators could implement this after-school program during the school year. During the 2009-2010 school year at Jefferson Middle School, Edison Middle School and Franklin Middle School in Champaign, YMW projects encouraged the development of broadcasting and journalism skills, with the assistance of Illinois Public Media staff.

Event with Educational Institutions Encouraging/Training for Broadcasting Careers. On an on-going basis, the WILL Stations work with faculty at University Laboratory High School in Urbana, Illinois to develop an oral history curriculum to train students in the basics of audio production and journalism. Each year, the students produce a documentary that is broadcast on WILL Radio, and a few have chosen to major in journalism at the college level. This past year, students produced Rethinking Assumptions: The Quest for Gender Equity in East Central Illinois, which aired on WILL-AM.
