The famous conductor Bruno Walter had to leave Vienna just before the Nazi takeover in 1938. Before he left, his performance of Mahler's 9th Symphony was recorded at a public concert. But Walter came back to Vienna after World War II, and he then made a famous recording of Mahler's "Song of the Earth", with the great contralto Kathleen Ferrier.

On this week's Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM, we will revisit these famous farewells.
