From theater pit to concert hall

Before the movies took over, live plays frequently had orchestras in the pit to provide music before and after scenes of the drama. Sometimes this ad-hoc music was of great quality and became part of the orchestral repertory. The theaters of Scandinavia were rich with the music of Grieg, Sibelius and Nielsen. We'll hear some of this music.
