Classics of the Phonograph: Mistislav Rostropovich
By John Frayne
The great cellist Mistislav Rostropovich had by 1969 become a major performing and recording star in both Russia and the West. Then, after defending the novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn, he became an unperson in Russia, and was expelled from Russia in 1974. He then resumed his career in Europe and the U.S. On COP, Saturday at 11, we will hear some of Rostropovich's classic recordings.
Playlist: Excerpts from Prokofiev's Symphony-Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Shostakovich's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, No. 1, and Dvorak's Cello Concerto for Cello and Orchestra (the last with the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Herbert von Karajan)
