Willem Mengelberg led the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra for fifty years, and raised it to worldwide fame. A conductor of the Romantic school, he changed scores to suit his interpretations. His records, both in Amsterdam and with the New York Philharmonic, were classics of the 78 rpm catalogs. On Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM, samples of his conducting style will be played.
