Winners of the Van Cliburn Award
Winning an international competition is a boost up for an instrumentalist, but it cannot guarantee an outstanding career. The winner of the second Van Cliburn Competition in 1966 was Rumanian Radu Lupu, who has gone on to make outstanding recordings of Schubert Sonatas, in a somewhat unconventional career. Irishman Barry Douglas in 1985 only earned a third place bronze medal, but went later on to earn higher honors.
On this week's Classics of the Phonograph, Saturday at 11 am on WILL-FM, we will hear recordings by these two artists.
