Frequencies of Freedom: The New Sound of Black Musical Expression

Stephanie Orellana / Illinois Public media

Pygmalion 2025 marked the festival’s 21st year, featuring “a curated festival of music, comedy, and literature across three days. This year two groups not only graced the stage with their presence but also sat down with Dialogue to use their voices and amplify the message of their music.

In this dialogue, we’re tuning into something deeper than melody, richer than rhythm. We’re witnessing the evolution of Black musical expression in real time. From Atlanta’s concrete and cosmos comes EarthGang—Olu and Doctor Dot—two architects of Afrofuturism and from the ethereal landscapes of contemporary R&B emerges the group BATHE—Corey Smith-West and Devin Hobdy. Through out this episode you’re hearing young Black artists refusing to be confined by genre, by expectation, by the narrow corridors that the industry has built.
