New U of I Chancellor talks Trump’s education cuts, quantum physics, and students’ Parliament Funkadelic style

Today is the first day of the fall semester at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, which is also welcoming new leadership. Charles Isbell is taking over from Robert Jones, who served as chancellor of the school for 9 years. He departed to become president at the University of Washington.

Chancellor Isbell is a computer scientist who was previously provost, the number two job, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a native of  Atlanta and went to the Georgia Institute of Technology for his undergraduate studies, and earned his PhD in computer science at MIT.

IPM News' Education Reporter Emily Hays spoke with Isbell last week. They discussed what he's learned on the job so far, his role in the state’s upcoming quantum park, and how he plans to adapt to federal funding cuts to higher education.
