Peter Serkin Performs Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations

Tonight, it’s The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center with Beethoven’s Opus 16 Quintet for Winds and Piano and Mendelssohn’s 1st String Quartet. At 8 pm, it’s the 2012 Gilmore International Keyboard Festival featuring pianist Peter Serkin playing the complete Beethoven Diabelli Variations.

Tonight, it’s the Chicago Symphony Orchestra led by music firector Riccardo Muti.  On the program: Dvorak’s 5th Symphony and Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony, the “Italian”.  You’ll also hear Respighi’s Roman Festivals and Martucci’s Notturno.

 The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, led by music director Edo de Waart, performs Schubert’s 5th Symphony and Brahms' 2nd Symphony. You’ll also hear Tan Dun’s “Water” Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra as well as Saint-Saens’ Symphonic Poem: Omphale’s Spinning Wheel.

The youngest artist to sign a contract with the prestigious record label Deutsche Grammophon, Lisiecki performs Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor with the New York Philharmonic. Also on the program are Sibelius' Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 7.

A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Tonight at 7:00 on The Evening Concert it’s “A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”  The first hour is devoted to works by Black American classical composers like William Grant Still; the second hour presents works that use Dr. King’s words as text: Nicholas Flagello’s “The Passion of Martin Luther King” and Joseph Schwantner’s “New Morning for the World.”
