Symphonies by Brahms, Elgar & Beeethoven featured on this week’s “Evening Concert”

Brahms' "Love-Song Waltzes" (Liebeslieder) are the centerpiece of the first hour of chamber music tonight, followed by the famous "Kreutzer" Violin Sonata of Beethoven
This late-in-life work by Beethoven is rarely heard because of the forces required to perform it and the performance challenges of the the music itself. Enjoy this concert broadcast from the NYP.
Lorin Maazel, former Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra, passed away Summer 2014. Tonight's program features Maestro Maazel at the podium.
And, oh, by the way, Paul Lewis drops by Symphony Center at just the right time to play Beethoven' "Emperor" Piano Concerto with the group.

The Baroque music on tonight's program is (almost all) absolute music, that is music for music's sake, while the "Pictures at an Exhibition" is a program work, an attempt to capture in sound a "program', in this case the paintings by Viktor Hartmann.
Many listener's introduction to Mahler's 5th Symphoyn is by way of hearing the "Adagietto" movement.....here that in context when you tune in tonight to hear the entire work.
Brahms' choice of the key of D Minor for the work is, according to biographers, a nod to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in D Minor and Mozart's famous D Minor Piano Concerto.
