Evening Concert

Mahler 6th Symphony from New York Phil

Tonight at 7:00 on The Evening Concert it’s "The New York Philharmonic This Week" with Mahler’s 6th Symphony. The program differs from the one in Patterns Magazine. The composer

described the hammer blows in the final movement as "three hammer-blows of fate, the last of which fells the hero as a tree is felled."

Also on the program, Mahler’s “Songs of a Wayfarer”.

The New York Philharmonic This Week (Program #13-27)
Alan Gilbert, conductor
MAHLER: Symphony No. 6 in A minor, “Tragic”

New York Philharmonic "Bonus"
MAHLER: Songs of a Wayfarer; Fischer-Dieskau, baritone; NY Philharmonic; William Steinberg

If you haven't heard this song cycle, I highly recommend it, especially with the great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing. The recording is from the NYP Archives. To the best of my knowledge, the broadcast tonight is from this set. It appears to have been issued on a 12-CD set by the New York Philharmonic (#NYP-9801). That information is from a book New York Philharmonic: The Authorized Recordings, 1917-2005 By James H. North found at books.google.com:  - Vincent Trauth

Enjoy the concert!
