Truth to Power Festival II from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on tonight’s :“Evening Concert”
The phrase “speaking truth to power” originates from a Quaker treatise published in 1955 that outlined alternatives to violence and became a cornerstone of the pacifist movement. Britten, Prokofiev and Shostakovich all believed that the artist had to serve society by creating music that would inspire justice and fairness. Their works celebrate music’s ability to connect people and thus harness the power of shared experience. Tonight at 7:00 on the “Evening Concert” on WILL-FM 90.9 guest conductor Jaap van Zweden leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in two works from the “Truth to Power” Festival: Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony and Britten’s “Violin Concerto” with soloist Simone Lamsma).
