This week on the “Evening Concert” on WILL-FM 90.9 you’ll hear “A Season’s Griot 2016” then Handel’s “Messiah” from Chicago, Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major from Cleveland, “The New York Philharmonic This Week” and Sunday. . . . chamber music from Lincoln Center and “This is Cabaret: Anne Hampton Callaway and Friends”.  That’s “The Evening Concert” Monday through Thursday and Sunday evenings at 7:00 on WILL, FM-90.9 and online at will.illinois.edu.

Monday December 26: Holiday Specials (pre-empts Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra

A Season’s Griot 2016 and An Afro-Blue Christmas

Hosted for nearly 20 years by acclaimed storyteller Madafo Lloyd Wilson, this annual nationally syndicated Kwanzaa special captures the tales and traditions of African American and African peoples. This year’s program celebrates “Family & Celebration”.

Howard University's premiere vocal ensemble Afro Blue and special guest pianist Cyrus Chestnut perform a variety of holiday songs including African-American spirituals, jazz and pop tunes, and classical repertoire.  The joyous celebration includes one of a kind arrangements on traditional holiday songs plus new compositions.

Hanukkah Lights 2016 and Chanukkah in Story and Song            

A perennial NPR favorite with all new Hanukkah stories. Authors include R.L. Maizes with more authors TBA. Hosted by Susan Stamberg and Murray Horwitz.

This hour-long Chanukah favorite returns: A celebration by The Western Wind performing Ladino songs of Spanish Jews, Yiddish melodies of Eastern Europe and modern Israeli tunes. 

(Chanukah starts at sundown on Saturday, December 24 and ends the evening of Sunday, January 1)
