On September 22, 1985, the first Farm Aid concert took place at Memorial Stadium on the University of Illinois campus. It featured more than 40 acts, among them organizers Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young. The benefit concert raised more than $9 million to help the nation%u2019s struggling farmers, and it raised awareness about the plight of the American farmer.
 
Illinois Public Media%u2019s Sean Powers talked with concert organizers, including Willie Nelson; people who attended; and small family farmers to look back at the concert and gauge its impact.
