580 Middleville is a little town in central Illinois
you’ve never been to because it doesn’t exist but you may have been to other towns
that could be Melville could be home to the wall Beazer brothers chicken
chicken buddy and their respective families Ryan bar to make grew up in one of those
does towns and he made central Illinois the setting of his debut novel on

onward toward what we’re going toward published a few months back my EGR publishing
now feel like to be part of our conversation with Ryan Bader made a day you can email acid
it will dash talk at Illinois dot edu also welcome your questions on
Amazon Facebook and Twitter at focus 580 Ryan Bartimaeus on the phone with
fun with us from Chicago where he is the Dean of general education and Kendall come
do college Orion welcome to focus Happy New Year 2014 glad to have you
have you and I’m wondering Ryan first about the title on word toward what we’re going toward what is that

what is a title come from well um yeah I like that that thing song HRO
the title at what I was trying to title that actually the original
original title of the book wise chick Evans chick wallpaper with chicken
early draft a chick Evans in his own way and I like
I like this guy 105 title but as I continue to to work on
work on the book um when I got to the point where a chick started reading poetry
tree sap off of haikus that appear at the end

in the novel um that was called on we’re going
just like sing song plays on the soffit set up the town
the tone of the book I want to be playful I want to know that was a little play for
playful going in rifle so there was a time
what I do, you came up with as you were as you were writing a check will be Ceres portrait
poetry yes that’s correct okay just came to you in that way and I have to admit I was real
reading cinemas Baldwin some of this effort to be red eyes

it could happen anywhere in the country but I did the live for several years in the PR
the Peoria area and um I remember people trying to write poetry
3 all along those lines okay poetry that was really are technically
Glee quite bad but what is credible ease painful
painfully heartfelt right yeah yeah hot chicks poetry is heartfelt is bad
that’s true what I was trying to do with that is
an actual aware of writing poetry in central Illinois

when I was I started writing it when I was in New York in 2003
3 hour diet for 10 years actually I have a first 50
Sears York and Chicago
another 5 years um so yeah twins
address for the the the poetry I want to use that as a vehicle Tom Ford
for his dealing with the pain of a ton
IMAX I just fell FL price

hot to me um something that he discovered
what happens that actually when he was that uh uh library down
down his feelings in a library in point out to him that what he just written could be
bi2 and then he spends the next I 30 years
as ridin high
the terrace something playful little funny
funny about that what was one of the things I was trying to do with the f***

um I was trying to get at real human emotion
does also trying to get out funny I feel real
cyride ass to be to be in a tanning bed
when writing that important aspect of writing a short
short story or whatever is test center humoron
playfulness is is this is just there to entertain
no I check won’t be there I guess it really is the main character of the novel

what so much of the book is not just about him about his brother buddy and their wives
wives and families and and and and and also a and also Marriott Norwood
Norwood who comes into the story umm we’ll really on in the novel b***
what chronologically was quite a few years later uruz spread the other the hole
the whole action of the chorus about half a century write a rule Ryan how to store a
develop for you did you see the scope of it when you first started working on it or is it
send something that developed over time well um I guess I didn’t want to write a novel

I’m not with something out that I would willfully trying to do um
how many first novel to wire subject matter
if it clear first person novels contemporary novels
what might have written
the first person novels um a lot of them have to do with age
a weekend so I was
why was willfully trying to do something large I want to do you like a very ambitious

xScope novel characters
what I have to wear to slam that in 200 pages of the first come first
the first draft first couple draft the first five years really as I thought I was riding
riding a really short big scope of Allah
um and I really try to make that work under the influence
Barry Hannah paper writer of mine is novel read a witch
covers lot of time in is really short fast 5 years trying to do

before I realized I already been written and it was written by Barry
Hanna Andersson a way I could write that f*** so good I stumbled into the
the consciousness I’m part of the book where am I now
I’m out of the different characters consciousness chicken body
are there wives Ali G what is life
wife ass Dian chicks wife and then Mary Norwood
wood at her husband green Geneseo

I really really want to get a haircut chestnut and try to understand his character
characters om one reason I want to do this is because this is not my strength
princess as a writer what comes with riders dialogue in scene
what does not coming writing a character consciousness
add 5 years trying to teach myself how to inhabit that the conscious
consciousness of the character that really built a novel around that’s really work wear
where is larger and got bigger than a bit more ambitious synonym

which is actually really got a lot
a lot of fun for me at right the first couple years doing now
teaching myself struggle but after I turn a corner
corner lot of fun what was interesting the idea of a big knot
big novel I was reading publisher Robert last publishing calls your name
does your novel of Midwestern 100 Years of Solitude overstatement
will realize we get down to it there are only six main characters

actors Wright brothers there’s there’s a Bears on this is chicken done
Dian there’s buddy and is it leegit is the correct how do you pronounce a
yeah BGN actually it’s interesting because she’s an Indian American character
character add a name is legion I had a student
students of a while back when I was riding the novel American
the time I was trying to come up with um at her name
name and I just name turvy G American

woman who is that name just out
Nayeli thinking maybe a common Indian name as it turns out after
novels publication I was talking to a friend of mine
American woman at the name the characters
look at me like I never heard before
alot when I ride a nite rider I know right right
right right pick up the pieces later I realized

all the states that I have a nice life as a rider
make all of this stuff off and I have to go back in an incorrect things I didn’t
I didn’t change that because of that point that character of Miami
Willie G’s a very
pivotal character in the novel she’s married to buddy
but I see is someone that chick is attracted to when there’s a God
there’s a will there’s a very crucial backrub given very early

early in the novel with striped so many more vents after that it’s cracked death
yeah she she was the kind of the catalyst
best for wet what happened at writing desk jump
jumpstart a lot of like a domino effect on mouse pad
fatback Rob that she give check on his
wedding night early in the box first temple of pages in the box
what kind of cement what happened between

brothers family
on what you do to me
reading after reading the novel it seems that I’ll be so very
Gary Owen pulse of an lonely characters are in pulse of the only seem to be doing something
something to think I’ll make a real difference usually without much information to go on
Miley and lonely because none of them seem to have anybody to
define in Medina Mike give him a sounding board on whether or not they were doing the right thing

write you see these characters I do ya Messi the characters of all of them
all of them are are are lonely I take all of them are are driving to make a connection
and oftentimes I weigh that ass
aspiration connect to fast as a
perverted a sexual fantasy
um and I think what you mentioned in terms of i know it
impulsive I think that I think that’s correct I think they all have a desire to

do good to do the right thing but they jump at the
what the first thing that comes into their mind like chicken has fallen tree for Apple ID
the library drop something down and library
2 ne spend the next 30 years
years trying to write a haiku wholesome way to call about being a cop
how it um and to deal with your emotions

what is focus mg Meadows talking with rider Ryan Barton

look at focus 580 now that I’ve a loose sentence

in central Illinois in a town called Middleville with a pumpkin
pumpkin Camry and you yourself come from what temp for Morton
Morton Morton Illinois which is the capital of the world what’s up what’s up with a large Libby’s
Nestle’s um um pumpkin cannery it’s about 10
why don’t know about the 10 15 miles of the West east of pizza peel
Peoria cross the river is Right crack and so I’m wondering Middleville
you know we could be more could be a lot of small towns in Tazewell County was the idea

Church Middle Village imagine is a
is that is a fictitious town in early draft I II name
name of town Centralia south
and I like the name Centralia I’m at Joe Satriani
Ryder um and I now
Joe Centralia and then I built up Centralia with all of the eye
Morton landmarks basically a pumpkin counter Rihanna Main Street with

with out with 6 which is the department store that was important Stafford
a family of grocery store that was in Morton IL
clothes with six sense close and then when you know what I sold
sold the book 2 gig I made that change changed from Centralia to
20 pound kettlebell live it up that
Batman because I asked I worry that someone from Southern Illinois from central
baby yourself would read a novel and say what is not a fan of a pumpkin can

can cats with 6 that was there so I got a little nervous
fictionalized at why do recognize a lot of names in the cannery in Wichita
what six remember San Francisco accident on over the area when I was okay
ok in Peoria certified Gary bass convenience store chain price
alot of other names for Peoria Rivermen the paradise casino the other one world
coffee houses are all anybody in Peoria Illinois does places right that’s correct
is using actual and Mark part of the second star to the book when I was

Park Ave I graduate school
what time at a little homesick for birth control
Illinois Central remember if your fat
central Illinois 1993 to go to college
College undergrad University of Iowa Iowa City can I live
after graduating college town in Austin Texas for couples
couple years in Boston for New Years in New York

reading stories about a small town
Illinois more lasses trying to understand I think
where where I came from what about Illinois
how do I do the landmarks II and I know what I know the details
tales from Portland to know the details when your trying to create something to an error
narrative in artificial narrative with the word that is doing research
stuff to my imagination TaxACT

that’s the reason why I said it there I didn’t
I didn’t I didn’t a chance to go online from your website a night should know you do for website
Ryan Bartel Maine dot is incorrect
and I will make sure to get a link on a little later on our website will.
Illinois edu slash Focus hybrid Aldis flatness which I believe
you set in Deer Creek on the Mackinac Bridge right yeah that’s true and Mackinaw
also flows through your fictional Middleville is well it does Jack Mack on River Road in Portland

River to me growing up by I use to can you with my dad
is France and Mackinaw River we had a app that had friends
friends have I got a deer hunting cabin on the Mackinac Bridge Mackinac
over the river so I spend alot of time around Mackinac bratty kid
River cabins
app that has a portent part of my childhood side does show up
quite a bit set when we have a cooler in and out we have to

we have to take a gentleman because he’s calling for Morton and dumb
online Foretrex for morning good morning urine focus morning
good morning I just want to know if Ryan
is trying to put tray on the Dark Side of the people’s
personalities um are the dark side of
does the Falling Man RR a human bean does the novel seems to be
somewhat dark throughout everybody striving to get somewhere

and that’s my question
sure that’s some think that was intense
intentional that I ave what in the penis darkest what is bad
at the characters of struggling is much is struggling 5
think again in one of the things that drive me as it as a rider
Ryder um to to write is it to try to understand something
why don’t I go into a book RR short story

trying to understand I will try to understand people
Illinois um and then what comes out
the darkness or whatever I buy product of fat
certainly that something that act that came out of the box
f***  orexin thank you very much for your
search for your call you know I’m just just for my 2 cents I got the idea
reading this book this is a book in which no one seems to get clay

quite what they want but they sure are trying hard is it
is is is is is is is that accurate a thing Ryan yeah absolutely
might be a mom
you can really teach a worldview in NM this is part of my my world
world you think that um I think that’s honest I think a lot of people driving
driving test note to search your life and I don’t always end up doing
what they want to do all does a try and I think there’s something really

beautiful about the trying to struggle something Universal Rawlings age
working on that I think maybe part of the darkness
what is is the honesty that we do fail and a lot of people
people fail a lot of people don’t get what they say set out to do a hot flash
do you think that’s going to be on is is an ongoing semen you’re working your shorts
short stories in the Bible so far or do you want to write about people who are you
who are able to be on the market tomorrow um so far

farting a lot of it has been what were talking about
actually on my wife out of my work cheats to make a comet
sometimes I stare at your work is so fat
sad person I’m not a fat person have a lot to be to work at you
beautiful daughters 13 2 month old wonderful wife
wife what is just um it just happens that you know the way that I see you
the struggle of humanity I guess is that

lotto a lot of striving um and not quite Grafton
after not quite getting what what you may want out of life
now I suppose and I don’t know if this was on something or call it was was wondering about
is if I ain depicting these people as as as
really 20 on the dark sides and their lack of success in offense going wrong
you are making a comment about a bad people in central Illinois people in
Ellen Morton where were you grew up or just about people in general

people in general um I’m not in my ass
why it is that supposed to be a parent as a trail
all of the people in central Illinois don’t see all of the people
you don’t want to end up like Michael Ealy mastersons name is mud
is hometown because of the Spoon River anthology right right job that way
you know that yeah yeah that that’s not my attempt
alot of its just me trying to understand

the human condition that ends in trouble and you know what that means nice asses
set this book in central Illinois because I know the details I know that that’s easy to say
riders bag accessory there at work
work places because they say in the area Faulkner
North Mississippi Hemingway and I
Academy stories that are all in the Michigan area
area riders do if dead help

easier now ah terms of the Internet
look up a lot of the tails in Everett ruined in an increase
increase the artifice off of artifice and create
the world just buy a cherry picking details of Internet
do a little bit of this that and the f*** with a Las Vegas to LA
Las Vegas wife about Las Vegas
street name stripper dick in Las Vegas

internet in with the Google Maps you can figure out street name
names located in UK I ll make it you’ll like
like Las Vegas are the writers for from Las Vegas
like I said I did do that b***
Air and you know I’m something something king
there are the physical that there is there are the physical places you could you

what you could I draw the names of any particular place NC mention about writing about Las
Las Vegas going to the internet you close your eyes and think that your hometown does
does it evolve a certain feeling a certain atmosphere to you and can you describe
scribe that yeah I mean um
certainly dies ah the feeling that I am about
is it I have
have for a small town um I was after another

interview at app review talking about how I have to
1119 of the dying of the town that was intentional
but it possible that part of artifice mean
small town anymore I live in Chicago different bed
everytime I go down on my parents to live there
I go down to central Illinois frequently in the end
feel the contract I’m so maybe part of it was the

I’ll be leaving small town
how that part of me is gone and I don’t have
I don’t have a desire porn
maybe it’s my own coming of age well that I was working out

greed likes you use with a light, or think you could like him
I’m driving back to we care accept from a substitution
in Middleville and that’s a neck
xnxn from onward toward what we’re going toward read by the author
Ryan bartlomiej Mary Geneseo is who I called Mary
Mary Norwood corset was her maiden name Marley stir on her previous their previous

previous name for any previous marriages shemale pad ob I was
strokos without Mary’s character who is
set by voice is essentially the voices of the two sides of her conscience
chance the loudest voice in the whispering voice right and dumb
that was that was really a character worry hurts the most interior
dialogue long because of you because of the loud voice the whispering voice
voice are always arguing over what she should do right yeah I was really

who is really with that I was really interested in the conflict of these two voices in Turbo
pulling her ass in two different directions to whether or not
give into this and Paul talking about character in a bowl
earlier what are the importance of going to
Florida with check in check out Florida which you want to go to
op 40 chasing down his past in E
Florida second chance with Mary

yo a** write his
is is life is life is passed away
and then the other voices for telling her that
fat that she can’t do that anymore spend her entire life doing that married
8910 time numerous times too many times to relieve a cow
count account man in her life
Hakeem from a man to man to man to man

other another time worksheets that important to do it yet again
telling her that you can’t stop doing that
play that out in her
consciousness trying to get that alot of
lot of us thinking that way I know that I’ve automat way for
I have to go to voice is in your head
opposite direction are you on your characters

how tall like specific people you’ve known are are are you drunk
drawing from a whole lot of people in constructing a drive from a lot of people
the book a kind of started when I started writing at
like I said lack like in New York um I was thinking about
about eyes this man his name was I check advance
at night I use to clean wool country
Airport how much is a small local 41 Morton Tom and eyes to swell

swim at with friends when I was 10 11 12 years old in Houston
how to clean a pool in at the time he was a retired ad
I was always really interested in his name he was around the community a lot
lots basketball high school basketball game running
high school talk to him about sport and then
name chick Evans with the name so I started writing this story eyes
IAAI I just have to use the name and started venting

a life for his name has nothing to do with chicken
person in Wharton but I really like the name in MA
eventually change the name to check wall to wall theater is a family name of mine
myNet gay chicken
that last check chicken no I don’t
anything on bike 141 characters
tell me how long does it take you to write the book

workout for 10 years 10 years of pretty regularly are offset on um
pretty regular I mean I would stop to work out the projects
you mentioned earlier that you read this story I’m Office flat ass
fat ass house work on the Parkside I would take breaks and I
short story come back to its my processor
process as a writer s how to write a draft
draft and then I will bring it out reaDit

note that I have literally kind of um
set the next to me and I retake the whole thing Paige Wyatt
white page by page um banana tempura inhabited
the novel the characters the Texas
a long time to do that are you re writing as you re type yes
absolutely gas on large things I’m drinking bag
Hanjin what are some of the biggest changes

changes you made over 100 over your multiple drafts
what is consciousness for one that was kind of the biggest when we spoke about that
that earlier jacket consciousness that really hot enlarged
the characters Mary Geneseo is consciousness
the the whisper voicemail loud voice audition
Deshun that baby K minutes 607 like that
that um so these things that I’ve that would a tangent that I follow

Maryland baby I can I can enlarge her consciousness by
Best Buy having two different voices that she. In her consciousness
that would be one really major difference
this of course was the first novel you had attempted um
who was the running process by itself just trying to put together a novel
finally found a spot I mean I can cook with it for
so yeah I end a lot of it was just know

teaching myself how to how to write a novel
um at that that that that
overcoming um I might go to
if it’s difficult what to write
bad overcoming up my own voices in my head
talking about why you trying to do this
caricature trying to write a love boys in Westbury Voice yourself

guided yeah early when you’re when you’re when you’re writing your
kind of a in overcoming the voices in your head that are telling you
why is it that at this
why was St Paul of the temptations if you’re going to spend 10 years
should know you were in graduate school during a lot of this time in your studies
creative writing so you said they had some impotence to right right
um but it would just be so easy to give up yeah absolutely

I mean it is it is it is it is it is easy to give up but
message to something um what I’m really interested in writing is the discipline
the point of it going to everyday I am working for an hour
hour by hour and a half to hours whatever whatever it is
something that is started
meditative um to do that and that’s really was important
the the publishing and Happiness

that’s a by product in math that’s great in it
define and I like talking to you about the f******
reviews Sol a sol byproduct of the real work
the day today struggle of trying to rise
trying to understand things about yourself and
humanity condition I’m not really what it’s about I mean um
there their and I hope you continue to write on

novels because that’s really wear Elvis really work
fastest working at my work on another f****** baby to take another test
baby won’t get published what the actual active writing and doing it
going to the basketry day inhabited that at
space I think that that that they can be a better person
better father import
well that’s interesting I think that’s the first time I’ve heard somebody talk about the actor

act of writing as being worthy worthy in itself
rather than just the means towards the end I think I’m for lots of riders
who are glad to a produced books but but then the necessary
enjoy the process of doing so mean enjoys interest
interesting words like the right words right Inc
um I think it’s just the way I had to engage in an app
processing mean let’s face it I don’t make em i dont make a living

the writer you know I’m not yet anyway to not a lot of money to be made as a right
the writer um in the pressure to do to make a living out where would have to be
would be so I meant to live on your craft of the refrigerator
writer that I’m not sure I could handle that what would I can’t handle it
is is is is doing doing this no. And trying times
understand myself and condition like I said I’m going to it
send using it as a form of meditation to form of a triangle

better person really that’s that’s what’s interesting
that’s what I win when does the voice start talking in my head as I’m working
working on PC action pretty dark times
because I sleep affirmations to publish
what you’re doing its not very good at work red eye mean I have to remind myself
myself if that’s not the point no point isn’t that isn’t
is in the results of the Labour the points is a labor and doing work

work well we are talking with a Ryan bottle made of
who’s on first novel on we’re toward what we’re going toward your on focus
Jim Meadows still time for your questions for Ryan at 1 800 222 945
455 email acid will dash talk at Illinois .edu
phone number again 1 800 222 wyll Bryan
what you just said about being a writer being one who writes in the act
the Act writing being valuable itself for hamsters in contrast to what you have a chicken

logic won’t be doing who was once he discovers that some of his
really sad thoughts can be fashion in a haiku
decides to be a poet which means for him growing up scraggly little beer
beard and and and and and wearing a beret this is all part of being a poet
what is Mars is Farsi is concerned yeah baby I’m part
I’m part of that is why I was working out my myself what is this
what does it mean to be a writer does it mean to be a writer’s how many appearances

and you know it in the novel that mad fat guy
gross French beard Witches of a little bit of hair on anything
where to buy red corduroy blazer in the book part of a poet
guess what I was saying there to myself
that’s not what writers out about trying
what is out and in what you did
who did finish a book and you also got it published with eg publishing which of

from what I’ve looked at it sounds like an interesting publishing house in itself if you can tell me anything about it
sure yeah egg is a a small independent press
craft and um in Brooklyn New York at about handbook
your mom have 4500 literary fiction
directions to have a nonfiction book well

If you were going to create a town with fictional characters who could live anywhere in the world, where would those characters go when they go home? Your first inclination may not be central Illinois. After all, there are much more exciting places to set a novel. But Morton native and author Ryan Bartelmay says he wouldn’t think to write about characters living anywhere else. This hour on Focus, we'll listen back to when he talked with host Jim Meadows about his debut novel, “Onward Toward What We’re Going Toward.” We’ll hear about why he writes about cultures in small towns in the Midwest and will hear about a set of characters who make a living working at a pumpkin canning factory.
