October 26 Illinois History Minute

It’s October 26. And on this day in 1881, Monmouth Illinois native Wyatt Earp took part in the Gunfight at the O-K Corral in Tombstone, a town in the Arizona Territory. Town Marshal Earp and his brothers Morgan and Virgil and John “Doc” Holliday shot it out with five outlaws known informally as the Cowboys. Three of the outlaws, Tom and Frank McLaury and Billy Clanton, were killed.

Former presidential First Lady, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was born in Chicago on this day in 1947. During an Illinois campaign trip for her husband Bill Clinton in 1992, Mrs. Clinton spoke with ten-year-old Katie Schrepfer on WILL’s Treehouse Radio.

CLINTON: “I’ve done a lot of work with adults, too, but you know, I love to work with children because oftentimes, children are very honest. They will tell you

exactly what they think. And they have an attitude of hopefulness that sometimes adults lose.”
