New IPM service launching in the new year

Written by Jill Clements
Over the past two decades, Black owned media companies have disappeared in central Illinois leaving these communities underserved. The Black population is growing faster than any other minority group in our area, while Black narratives, images, and culture are not reflected consistently in mainstream media.
Illinois Public Media recognized this media imbalance and sees this as an important opportunity to unapologetically fill the gap by providing a platform that celebrates Black voices, Black experiences, and Black culture.
Launching on February 1, 2024, during Black History month, this new station will bring central Illinois communities and beyond a new 24/7 public audio service, featuring a blueprint format for attracting adults 30+ with high-quality Black NPR Newstalk shows — such as Code Switch and It’s Been a Minute — married with smooth jazz, neo soul, R&B, and throwback jams from Luther Vandross and Anita Baker, along with other popular programs from Will Downing to Robert Glasper. Most importantly, this new station will also feature a local community affairs show each week.
IPM is excited to be intentionally changing the media landscape with the support and guidance from respected Black community leaders and Black University of Illinois professionals that are advocating for the mission of the station and its listeners.
Tracy Parsons, Community Advisory member and Community Coalition Facilitator, states “the importance of Black voices and perspective is more important today than ever. This radio avenue and social media platform are critical life supports to tell the Black communities’ story and also builds, empowers, and informs communities of Black values and contributions.”
Nielson research shows that Black Americans listen to radio and podcasts longer than other communities. According to our local feedback surveys, a Black media service will be important for amplifying Black stories, connecting communities, and celebrating Black excellence.
This new station will engage listeners not just on air and online, but it will also super serve audiences at exclusive events including: The Black Church and GOSPEL documentary screenings and panel discussions at the Virginia Theatre, along with News, Brews & Beatz TV tapings and networking mixers, plus a kickoff concert featuring a national recording artist.
There will be endless opportunities to partner with Illinois Public Media on this new effort with underwriting sponsorships support from area and regional companies, in addition to non-profit organizations who are looking to reach this desirable demographic with their categories of services.
Stay tuned for a full announcement, including the station's name and dial location, coming December 13.
