Mid-American Gardener

Spring Has Sprung - May 2026 Wrap-Up

Spring is in full swing but you don’t have to put everything in the ground just yet…The MidAmerican Gardener crew spent the month of May getting you ready for the planting season!

This month on Mid-American Gardener, Kelly Allsup and Chuck Voigt start by helping you navigate the rhythm of mid-to-late spring planting. Learn which crops are ready to thrive now and which warm-season vegetables need a little more patience. Think, Memorial Day?!

Retired entomologist Jim Appleby and Champaign Park district site supervisor Rusty Maulding join us in the studio to talk all things pollinators, pruning, and planting timing.

Kelly Allsup and Martie Alagna join Tinisha in the studio to talk spring planting strategy and why Central Illinois gardeners still have plenty of time to grow a productive vegetable garden.

Finally, Jennifer Nelson, Jennifer Fishburn, and Kay Carnes join Tinisha in the studio for a flower-filled episode packed with seasonal garden inspiration.

If you have questions (send photos if you have them!), we’ve got you covered. Send questions to yourgarden@gmail.com, or check out our Facebook page and feel free to leave your questions there! We will try to get it answered on an upcoming show or web segment!
