Unlocking Garden Mysteries

The Fall Equinox is coming, and Karen and Ella are excited to answer your garden questions this week as we begin to wrap up the growing season. 

 

Ella showcases a poinsettia that defies the norms of flowering time. These plants rely on the length of daylight to bloom. Commercial growers manipulate their day lengths, but home gardeners can watch these wonders bloom naturally in response to the shortening days. The poinsettia promises a surprise near Christmas, making us anticipate its next appearance on the show. Remember, you don’t have to throw that poinsettia away; it can continue growing for years to come!

 

Karen and Ella help to identify various plants including trumpet vine and a tropical hibiscus. They also delve into the beauty of dogwood and its benefits to pollinators and wildlife. Make sure you do your own research when looking to at any perennials to your yard and visit a local garden center to consult with an expert! We also discuss the benefits and drawbacks of various types of mulches and how to overwinter begonias.
