Champaign Swarm Player Shot And Killed In Chicago

Champaign Swarm player Jonathan Mills died Monday after being shot multiple times outside a store on Chicago's west side.  A Chicago Sun-Times report states the 26-year-old was shot multiple times in the 4100 block of West Roosevelt at 1:27 p.m.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our prayers are with his family and young child," said Kevin Applebee, general manager for the Swarm, in a statement. "All the Champaign Swarm staff and team will miss his passionate spirit on the court and in life, his aggressive style on the court and the motivation he inspired in his teammates will be missed."

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Jonathan," said MPBA Commissioner Ed Schumer. "He was a great player and well-regarded by teammates and coaches. I personally found him to be extremely professional and likeable. He will be missed."

In eight games with the Swarm this year, Mills averaged 14.5 points and 10.1 rebounds.

Mills had just finished competing in The Basketball Tournament, a national $2 million winner-take-all tournament, for the Illinois Hoopville Warriors. In 2008, Mills led North Lawndale High School to an Illinois High School Association Class 2A state championship.
