Dom Flemons Returns To C-U Folk And Roots Festival
You may have recently seen Dom Flemons on the Ken Burns documentary “Country Music,” which aired last month on PBS and WILL-TV.
You’ll have several more chances to see Flemons this weekend as part of the Champaign-Urbana Folk and Roots Festival, which runs through Saturday night at several venues in Urbana.
Illinois Public Media’s Brian Moline spoke with Flemons this week about his most recent album, the Grammy-nominated “Black Cowboys,” and how he got his start playing roots music.
"When I was about midway through high school, after having played drums in the school band, I started playing guitar," Flemons said. "I got really deep into folk music, first the 60's folk revival, and over time as I went to college, I started to study folk music as a literature."
You can see Flemons perform at The Rose Bowl in Urbana both Friday evening at 8pm and Saturday evening at 6pm, plus he’s giving workshops this weekend on storytelling and playing the bones.
