Enyart Defends Vote About Furloughed Chaplains

An Illinois congressman seeking re-election says he had no choice but to be the only U.S. House member to vote against what he called a "stupid'' resolution allowing military chaplains to still perform their duties during the federal government's shutdown.

Belleville Democrat Bill Enyart was the lone "no'' vote of 401 that were cast in the House on the weekend resolution.
 
As the former head of the Illinois National Guard, Enyart calls the measure "an absolutely phony, feel-good bill'' that doesn't resolve Washington's bigger issues. And he says it included no funding mechanism for paying the chaplains.
 
Republican Illinois state Rep. Mike Bost is challenging Enyart for the seat and says he's shocked by Enyart's vote.
 
Enyart says he doesn't care, insisting he's more about serious governing than political posturing.
