Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill into law Friday officially recognizing the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology as a state agency.

This comes after the bill — HB5611 — passed unanimously through the General Assembly in the Spring.

Rauner says the Department of Innovation and Technology was created to modernize systems used by state employees, and also to improve cybersecurity for Illinois citizens.

Officials say the agency has encrypted more than 5.8 billion records since the governor first formed it by executive order in 2016.
