Jury Awards More Than $9 Million To Woman Struck By Bus
A Champaign County jury has awarded nearly $10 million to a woman who lost her legs after being struck last year by a Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District bus.
The jury voted in favor of the 61-year-old Patraicia Marxmiller of Mahomet on Wednesday after a week-long trial. In addition to the $9.4 million awarded Marxmiller, the jury awarded $450,000 in damages to her husband, Ken.
The News-Gazette reports Marxmillers' lawyers asked for about $20.3 million in damages. C-U Mass Transit’s lawyer, Marc Ansel, contended reasonable compensation would be about $6.4 million.
The Marxmillers filed the lawsuit soon after the Feb. 25, 2015 accident. C-U Mass Transit at one time contended Patricia Marxmiller walked into the side of the bus as she crossed Walnut Street in Champaign.
The transit agency has 30 days to appeal.
