The Mahomet-Seymour School Board may have found a buyer for its Sangamon School site.

The school board has scheduled a special meeting for 7:30 AM on Monday, November 13, at Middletown Prairie Elementary School At that time, it will consider a proposal to sell Sangamon School for $750,000 to 1000 Churchill LLC of Champaign.

The developer’s name is also the address of another project of theirs: a shopping center at 1000 Churchill Road on the east side of Mahomet. The first of three buildings there is already open and occupied.

Sangamon School is slated to close in June, 2018. 1000 Churchill LLC spokesperson Jill Guth says the developers want to convert the Sangamon school building complex in downtown Mahomet for office and service business use. Guth says their plan is to keep the existing buildings, and not demolish or replace them.

The $750 thousand proposed selling price for Sangamon School is less than half of the Mahomet-Seymour district’s original appraisal of $2.2 million.

The News-Gazette reports two auctions earlier this year failed to attract any bidders for the school. The newspaper reports the Mahomet-Seymour District had lowered its minimum bid over time from $1.8 million last January, to $600,000 at a third auction scheduled for November 20.

An item on Monday’s special school board meeting agenda would cancel that auction, following a vote on the proposed sale.
