The mayor of the central Illinois city of Monticello has resigned, saying he is struggling with chronic Lyme disease.  The News-Gazette reports that Chris Corrie told the Monticello City Council during Monday night's session.

The 56-year-old Republican says he spoke with his doctors and they told him he needs to reduce his activity. Corrie was an alderman for one term before he was elected mayor in 2009. He was serving his second term when he resigned.

The city council now has to find someone to finish the rest of Corrie's term through April 2017. City Attorney Derke Price says nominations can be made at the next council meeting.

Monticello is between Champaign and Decatur near Interstate 72. It has about 5,500 residents.
