Local officials cut the ribbon Monday morning on new road construction that links the north end of Urbana to I-57, via Olympian Drive.

A re-routed and upgraded North Lincoln Avenue now connects up to an extended Olympian Drive, including a bridge that crosses the Canadian National railroad tracks.

The bridge extends Olympian Drive from Champaign into Urbana, while the upgrades to North Lincoln Avenue allows incoming truck traffic to reach the industrial area on the north end of Urbana.

The extension of Olympian Drive opened last spring, but a route into Urbana was unavailable, until the completion of upgrades to North Lincoln Avenue.

The of Olympian Drive is a compromise. Local officials wanted to extend the road even farther east to U.S. Route 45. But they met opposition from owners of property located in the path of the proposed extension.
