Quinn Trying To Help Get Supplies To Philippines

Gov. Pat Quinn says he's trying to get permission from federal authorities to send relief supplies to the typhoon-damaged Philippines.

A shipment from the Filipino-American Council of Greater Chicago has been held up.

Relief organizers tell the Chicago Sun-Times that the plane they meant to send the supplies on hasn't departed.

Quinn visited the council on Friday morning and said he'd like to send an Illinois National Guard plane with the supplies. But he says first the state needs to get permission from the U.S. Department of Defense.  He says his office is seeking that permission.

Relief organizers say volunteers have packaged 5,000 boxes with medical supplies, food and clothing.

Last week's storm killed thousands and has left at least 600,000 homeless.
