University Of Illinois Makes Progress In New Medical School

The University of Illinois took another step closer to launching a new engineering-based medical school on the Urbana campus.

The Board of Trustees voted in March to establish the new college.

Provost Ilesanmi Adesida told a Board of Trustees committee Thursday that Carle Health System will contribute $50 million initially, plus another $50 million over the next five years.

“This is truly the moment where we move from imagining this new college to actively building it," Adesida said. "From launching this search for a founding dean to earning state and national accreditation. To recruiting our first new class."

Adesida said the college will be named the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine, unless a bigger donor steps up.

A search committee comprised of University and Carle Hospital faculty and headed by Adesia will soon begin the search for the first dean of the college.
