Urbana Boy Suffers Gunshot Wound, Teen Arrested

Urbana Police say an 8-year old boy is recovering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the head, and a 15-year old is Champaign County's Juvenile Detention Center after an incident at a home on the city’s east side.

Officers were called to a home on Hawthorne Avenue just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, where the teen claimed he had knocked a backpack off a table, which led to a modified flair gun going off.

After interviews, police found inconsistencies in the 15-year old’s story.

Urbana Police Sgt. Dan Morgan says the teen initially told police that he knocked a backpack off the table and then heard a loud sound.

But police say the15-year old's description of what happened was not consistent with the evidence officers found at the house where the shooting occurred.

Charges are pending with the Champaign County State’s Attorney.  The child is undergoing treatment at Carle Hospital.
