On this week's Prairie Performances, Friday at 7 pm on WILL-FM 90.9, we hear a colorful program with volcanoes as its musical subject. The Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra welcomes Carol Cook, principal viola with the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Cook performs Composer-in-Residence Stacy Garrop’s new viola concerto, Krakatoa - a work that is as dramatic and explosive as the title would suggest. Stravinsky’s delightful suite from Pulcinella will highlight many solo instruments of the orchestra. Other pieces performed include Rossini’s bubbly overture to The Barber of Seville and Schubert’s lovely Symphony No. 5, that both date from 1816. These pieces were inspired by “The Year Without a Summer,” which was caused by the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora.
