On this week’s Prairie Performances, we celebrate the birthday of Erik Satie (b. May 17, 1866) with a program exploring the life and works of the composer whom Claude Debussy deemed “the precursor.” An eclectic figure of fin-de-siècle France, Satie’s works are known popularly today for their use in film and television. However, behind those contemplative, melancholic pieces like his Gnossiennes and Gymnopédies lies a quick wit and absurdist sense of humor.
