Free book reading/signing with Sonia Manzano
Illinois Public Media is hosting Emmy-award winning actress, show writer, and book author Sonia Manzano for a free book reading and signing on Thursday, April 12, at the iHotel and Conference Center.
Manzano is best known for her portrayal as “Maria” on Sesame Street for 44 years. During her visit, she will share her experiences and challenges as one of the first Latinas in media and broadcasting in the 1970s. She will also discuss the importance of representation on television, especially in a show like Sesame Street.
Manzano’s various works comprise of books for both children and adults, including Becoming Maria: Love and Chaos in the South Bronx, The Revolution of Evelyn Serrano, No Dogs Allowed, Miracle on 133rd Street, and A Box Full of Kittens. Her presentation will be followed by a book signing.
This event is free and open to the public and will take place at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, April 12, at the iHotel and Conference Center (1900 S 1st St, Champaign, IL 61820). Doors open at 8 am and the event will include a light breakfast. Seating is limited, so RSVPs are required.
